Abstract. Cyber-physical systems (CPS) enable value creation in software. Nevertheless, there are challenges. We present a concept on how to approach the design and development of a software service, based on multiple CPS. We define our understanding of a specific CPS, specifying its graphical user interface components and architectural aspects, suggesting tools and design methodologies while explaining the alignment with existing approaches such as Industry 4.0 and SaaS. The multidisciplinary nature of CPS leads to several development challenges, and we focus our work on using design thinking techniques, methodologies, and tools that are valuable solutions and key to the sustainability of new designs. These insights may help researchers and industrial practitioners to develop and commercialize service-based CPS.
